Inked Australia/NZ 100,000 Facebook Fans Competition

Modern Medusa is still dead and buried (for the time being, at least) but I thought it would be cruel of me not to share this will you all.

To celebrate closing in on 100,000 fans on Facebook, Inked Australia/NZ are running their biggest competition to date.

From Inked Australia/NZ’s Facebook page:

Want $1000 towards your next tattoo?

To celebrate Inked Aus/NZ Facebook page about to reach 100,000 likes we’re giving away 100,000 cents (AUD$1000) towards one person’s next tattoo.

To win all you need to do is post a drawing/picture of the tattoo you want and tell us why you want it to our Facebook page before March 1st 2013.

The Inked Team will then choose their winner of the grand prize!

T&Cs: This is not a game of chance. You must live in Australia or New Zealand. Cash is not redeemable for the prize. The money (AUD$1000) will be paid directly to a registered tattooist (*NSW) in Australia or New Zealand at time of winner being tattooed. Contest runs from 12 February 13 till midnight 28 February 2013. This prize cannot be shared, but can be used over various sittings. Winner announced 4 March 2013. Winner chosen by Inked Australia/NZ team, not by most Facebook likes.

Put on your thinking cap, put pen to paper, create a collage of ideas and get writing. Inked Australia/NZ wants to know what you want for your next tattoo and why you want to win.

This money could mean finally being able to afford a tattoo from your favourite tattoo artist. Maybe you have no tattoos and want to get your first. Or perhaps you have a bad tattoo just begging to be covered up.

So far there are under 200 entries. It’s free to enter, so what have you got to lose? You have better chances of winning this than the lottery!

$1000 towards your next tattoo is huge. Show your appreciation by liking Inked Australia/NZ on Facebook, following them on Twitter @Inked_Australia and spreading the word!

Picking up copies of Inked Australia/NZ magazine, Inked Girls and Inked Artists wouldn’t hurt either 🙂

R.I.P. Modern Medusa

tombstone-RIP

After almost 18 months of working on this blog, as of today it is no longer.

Modern Medusa is dead.

It is closing in on a year since I last got tattooed. I’m out of the loop. I can’t remember what it feels like when that needle hits the skin. Due to my current situation I won’t be getting any new ink in the foreseeable future. To write about something that I love SO much which isn’t really a part of my life any more is difficult.

Will I be back? Maybe.

What happens in 2013 will pave the way. I can only hope that, one day, the path will lead me back to here.

I will, however, be continuing with my clean eating blog which you can view here Stacie Michelle or follow me on Twitter @michelle_stacie

If you want to keep up to date with Australian and New Zealand tattoo news, expos and all things tattoo art and culture, I suggest you pick up copies of Tattoos Down Under magazine or Inked Australia/NZ magazine, Inked Girls or Inked Artists.

Christmas Present Ideas

Click here to check out my past columns which feature plenty of Christmas present ideas for the tattooed people in your life.

Australian Tattoo Academy

It hasn’t taken long for some Aussies to jump on the bandwagon and try to make some quick cash from “teaching” people how to tattoo. Their “teachers are industry experts with years of tattooing experience”, yet they fail to name them, because no reputable and talented tattoo artist would involve themselves with a tattoo school. The Australian Tattoo Academy runs 10 weeks courses (1 class per week). Ten classes are apparently all you need to learn everything about tattooing. This just sounds like a recipe for disaster. I can just see hundreds of backyard tattooers popping up across the country, spreading disease, giving bad tattoos and smearing the reputation of true professionals.

In this article from the Herald Sun website, the owner of the school declined to be named; I wonder why. Schools like this cause more harm than good. However this tattoo blog decided to promote the Australian Tattoo Academy where some guy named Mitch was fielding questions.

Don’t waste your time or money with this place. If you truly want to learn about tattooing, get a real apprenticeship with a real professional tattoo artist who works in a licensed shop.

Sydney Tattoo & Body Art Expo 2013

Can you guess who is returning Down Under next year? The one and only Corey Miller. Check out the official Facebook page for a few other announcements.

My Favourite Things of 2012

I know 2012 isn’t over quite yet, but here is a list of My Favourite Things of 2012.

New Product – Chobani Greek Yogurt (you can check out my healthy recipes at my other blog here). I was spoilt as they sent me a case of yogurts to test out; now I’m addicted.

Podcasts –

  • The Wind Up
  • I Love Green Guide Letters
  • Little Dum Dum club
  • The Art of Wrestling with Colt Cabana

Tattoo Expo –  Rites of Passage Festival 2012 where I got a hand poked/tebori tattoo from Horishin.

Fitness Bloggers –

Jill Hanner
Kasey Arena – Powercakes
Cassey Ho – Pop Pilates

YouTubers –

Eat Your Kim Chi
Jenna Marbles
Daily Grace
You Deserve A Drink
My Drunk Kitchen

Movie – I think I only saw two or three new movies at the cinema this year and only because I reviewed them for Youthcentral. Going by that, Ted would have to be my favourite.

Song – Pink “Try”. The song has such deep and meaningful lyrics and visually beautiful video clip to accompany it.

Television Show – I Will Survive: Priscilla. I literally have never laughed as much at a reality television show. Tom was such a cutie.

Tattoo Artist – Benjamin Laukis

Magazine – Once again, Inked Australia.

New tattoo – I got quite a few tattoos this year, but my Bakeneko/Nekomata tattoo has inspired me to really look into Japanese mythology. I’m not sure when I’ll be getting tattooed again, so I’ll have to live vicariously through everyone else like I already do.

Amendments to South Australia’s Summary Offences Act

South Australian parliament has passed amendments to the Body Piercing and Body Modification section of the Summary Offences Act.  Minors must now be accompanied by their parent or guardian when getting a body piercing. And only those over the age of 18 can get  body modifications (tattoos, ear stretching, branding, scarification, tongue splitting) or genital piercings.

I believe these amendments put South Australia in line with the other states. These laws are in place to protect body piercers and tattooers, and their clients. If you find a body piercer or tattooer not abiding by these laws, avoid them at all costs; a true professional would not risk breaking the law and getting fined. Read the full article here.

Discrimination in the South Australian Police Force

What do you think about tattooed police officers? South Australia wants their tattooed police officers to cover up and may refuse tattooed people for applying to the police force. I see this as feeding the generalisation that tattooed people are criminals. As tattoos gain popularity there will be less people able to apply for the SA police force because they’re turning away perfectly acceptable applicants. Read the full article here.

Here are a couple of gems I found in the comment section:

“Tattoos are an abuse of the person and are ugly. I do not trust anyone with a tattoo.” You just have to laugh at comments like this. People would be surprised by the number of people they encounter socially or at work who have tattoos(but are hidden at the time), and they are none the wiser.

“Do these officers enjoy being tattooed by the bikies the so deeply despise. Good call banning them. Arent they suppose to be role models” Yet another misinformed person. For the most part tattooers are not bikies and have no connections with bikie gangs whatsoever.
